Departmental Profile: The Department of Chemistry, established in 1996, has been imparting training at advanced level of Chemistry in general to produce M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars. The research interests of the Faculty cover areas like Liquid Crystals, Micelles & Macromolecules, Co-ordination Chemistry & Bioinorganic Chemistry, Theoretical and Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry. The Department organizes Refresher’s Course, Workshop and Conferences with support from national level scientific organizations and societies. A number of research projects sponsored by UGC, DST, GBPIHED and DRDO have been undertaken by the faculty. A DST-sponsored project ‘FIST’ has been granted to the Department for a FT-IR equipment and computers with LAN. Two UGC sponsored research fellowship in Science for meritorious studens are available in the department.

Alumni of the Department of Chemistry of Assam University are now serving as faculty members/ reseachers in Universities, research institutions, colleges and in several industrial organizations in different parts of the country as well as different parts of the world. Many of the former students of the department have also qualified the competative examinations like NET (LS), NET (RF), SLET, GATE, & GRE and we are pursuing either advanced courses or doing job in USA, France and some other countries in the globe.
